Colorado springs officer shot over the weekend released from hospital; suspect remains at large1/14/2020
Colorado Springs, CO-The man who shot a Colorado Springs police officer over the weekend previously overpowered an officer at a local hospital and shot at him.
Randy Bishop, 35, shot at police late Saturday night during a traffic stop at the intersection of Galley Road and Arrawanna Street. Bishop had been on the run since escaping from police custody at Memorial Hospital in November, which is when Bishop allegedly assaulted an officer, took control of his gun, and fired at him before running out of the building and stealing a BMW.
In his latest encounter with police, authorities say he shot at officers as they approached his vehicle during the traffic stop.
Two officers approached the vehicle at which time they were met by gunfire. One of the officers was hit, but was able to return fire.
Sgt. Deborah Mynatt with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said, "They responded back with gunfire, so at least one round per officer was shot toward the driver. The suspect fled the scene by vehicle and then immediately after crashed.”
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office, says they do not know if the gunman was hit while exchanging shots with police.
The wounded officer was identified as Officer Beau Becker, a four-year veteran of the Colorado Springs Police Department. Becker has been released from the hospital.
