Fort Apache Indian Reservation, AZ- A White Mountain Apache Police officer was killed early Monday morning.
Officials say officers received a report of gunfire near the Hon-Dah Resort Casino shortly before 1 a.m. The first officer that arrived on scene located the man described in the call.
In a news release, the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office said, “The subject immediately engaged in a violent, physical altercation with the officer, during which the officer was shot. A second responding officer arrived shortly after, and fearing for his life and the public’s safety shot the suspect.”
The officer and the suspect were taken to a local hospital where they both died of their injuries.
District II Councilmember, Jerold Altaha, told media outlets that the officer has been identified as David Kellywood.
There are no other details regarding the incident at this time.
Officer Kellywood leaves behind a wife and two children.
