It is the age of defunding law Enforcement, But just because times have changed doesn't mean society should.
Los Angeles joins cities like Oakland, Milwaukee and Denver that have reduced or removed police from public schools, a move spurred by nationwide demonstrations against alleged police brutality. Some activists for police reform say officers end up "criminalizing" Black and Latino students or disproportionately punish them compared to students of other races.
The Los Angeles School Police were defunded this past Tuesday. The Agency had its funding cut by $25 Million dollars, Forcing the department to cut more than 40% of its current positions. The Officers will be replaced by "Climate coaches" According to the new school plan. This is just the lates hit to the department. Just a few months back the board agreed to slash the department budget by 35%, resulting in the police Chief's resignation along with 20 other officers.
Even though Majority of campus staff along with parents did not actually want the police presence to be cut, the Board decided to go against their staff and proceed with cutting 70 sworn personnel and 62 non sworn personnel.
