Lubbock, TX- A Lubbock police officer and firefighter are dead after being struck by a vehicle while working two accidents on Interstate 27.
Lubbock Police Chief Floyd Mitchell said that they have been identified a Nicholas Reyna, 27, and Eric Hill, 39.
Mitchell said officers ad firefighters were called to a single-vehicle rollover crash on I-27 on Saturday morning. It appeared as though the vehicle was traveling southbound and crossed the median into the northbound lanes where it rolled over.
While investigating the scene, another vehicle carrying a trailer was traveling southbound on I-27 when it crossed the median and came to a stop in the northbound lanes-25-50 yards away front the first accident.
Police and firefighters were working both accidents, when a third vehicle traveling southbound I-27 crossed over the median and struck on police officer and two firefighters.
The police officer was pronounced dead at the scene. The two firefighters were transported to a nearby hospital. One firefighter was pronounced dead and the other is listed in very critical condition.
“When road conditions get this bad we need people to understand that they need to slow down," Police Chief Floyd Mitchell said.
At this time, no charges have been filed.
