New York City, NY—Police are searching for a man who opened fire in front of children on a busy New York City street.
The incident occurred on February 22 at approximately 2 p.m on Gerard Ave in the Bronx. Police say the suspect walked up to a group of people, pulled a gun and aimed at a 19 year old man. The suspect fired three shots and then fled. A video released by the NYPD, show people on the sidewalk running or ducking for cover. Another video shows a little girl with a backpack waking home from school.
The girl is seen running towards the entrance of a building, but the front door was locked. She stood by the door until a woman finally let her in. "My heart dropped when I saw the little girl running for her life," said Awilda Cordero, a community activist who is haunted by the image of the little girl and the man firing shots. "If he did it now and he didn't care he'll continue to do it, so we need to get him off the street," said Cordero. The suspect is now wanted for reckless endangerment.
