Newark, NJ-A Newark teenager carjacked an off-duty police officer Saturday, setting off a chase that began with gunfire and ended in a crash and foot pursuit.
The officer got out of her black GMC Acadia on the 500 block of Hawthorne Avenue around 2:15 a.m. and a 17 year old climbed in her vehicle. The officer’s 12 year old daughter was in the backseat at the time.
Her daughter escaped unharmed, then the officer fired her department-issued gun at the vehicle.
The teenager fled in the officer’s car, which was later found unoccupied. The teen was located several hours later with two other people in a stolen Toyota RAV4 that police were looking for in connection with the carjacking.
Newark and Hillside police chased the RAV4, which crashed into a parked car before the three suspects jumped out and ran. All three were apprehended around 9:45 p.m., and the 17-year-old was charged with carjacking, conspiracy and receiving stolen property, according to police.
