Birmingham, AL-An off-duty police officer was shot and critically injured on Sunday morning while responding to a robbery call.
The shooting happened around the 5400 block of Georgia Road in the Woodlawn neighborhood.
Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith said the officer was off-duty, identified as narcotics Detective John Finke, and working as security at Church of the Highlands when a call came in about a robbery in the area.
Detective Finke was shot twice in the stomach nice under the arm.
Chief Smith said he was not wearing a bullet proof vest, and the bullets struck his intestines and vital organs. He is currently listed in critical condition at UAB hospital.
Chief Smith said two suspects are in custody after an extensive manhunt.
The two phones that were stolen during the robbery were tracked to one suspect in Ensley who's in custody. Police also recovered a handgun from that suspect.
Police arrested a second suspect after further investigation on Sunday.
The investigation is ongoing at the time.
