Poway, CA-A man entered a synagogue near San Diego and opened fire, leaving one person dead and three injured on Saturday, the last day of the Jewish holiday of Passover. The suspect is in custody.
Deputies were called to the Chanda of Poway synagogue just before 11:30 a.m.
An off-duty Border Patrol officer who was also in the synagogue fired shots at the suspect, but didn’t hit him, officials said at a press briefing. Another officer who was in the area in his car heard the 911 call and apprehended the suspect.
The 19-year-old suspect is from San Diego, officials said. Authorities gave no motive for the shooting.
The sheriff’s office said the situation was developing. “Remain clear of the area as this investigation will take several hours,” it said.
The injured were taken to Palomar Medical Center, where a woman died from her injuries. Two men and a girl were injured, authorities said.President Trump, departing the White House for a rally in Green Bay, Wisc., said the shooting “looks like a hate crime. My deepest sympathies go to the people that were affected—the families, the loved ones,” he said.
