For better and for worse, In today’s world policing has drastically changed. Many officers today feel as though their hands have been tied when it comes to certain incidents.
Officers complain that “we simply have to do what is dictated by policy, or we risk getting reprimanded”. While that makes sense in most cases, every case can not be handle by a general policy. Many times we receive calls where a child has called on their parent or co-parent for abuse, but when you arrive on scene and find out the totality of the situation surrounding the alleged abuse, you find it difficult to mitigate the situation between your binding contractual policy and parents Simply disciplining their children. Often times a report has to be generated and in some cases the parents have to be arrested for what most would consider “simple discipline”.
Unfortunately we live in a time where the children have control over the parents via 911. In undisclosed interviews, many officers stated “ we use to get disciplined as kids, it’s what made us respect others and stay out of trouble, but now it is not like that. It’s considered abuse”.
