Upland, CA—A mother is suspected of killing her seven month old daughter, then throwing or dropping her young son from a second story building, then jumping herself.
The 24 year old woman, Tierra Rose Ortega, and her 1 1/2 son were hospital after Upland police were called to the apartment. Police said Ortega could face a murder charge. “This is very unusual. It’s extremely tragic,” Upland police Capt. Marcelo Blanco said. Officers were called to the apartment after a neighbor called that a child was screaming or crying. The neighbor them saw the woman holding the child over a second story landing.
“She proceeded to drop the child down from the second story,” the captain said. “From what we gather, it was an intentional act, it wasn’t accidental.” Blanco said the boy fell about 12-15 feet and suffered a broken foot. When officer arrived, Ortega jumped and landed on her face which caused her to sustain injuries. Officer went into the apartment and found the seven month old baby not breathing. She died once at the hospital.
The cause of death has not yet been determined, however she had a possible skull fracture and internal injuries. According to court records, Ortega has been booked into the West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of assault on a child younger than eight, attempted murder, and murder. The children’s distraught father was called home from work and police had to hold him back as he struggled to climb the stairs to the apartment. He spoke to police but “has no idea what led to this,” Blanco said.
