Qualified immunity? And why is everyone after it?
Qualified immunity is a bill which resides in the law- Enforcement bill of rights. That bill protects police officers from frivolous lawsuits when police officers make a reasonable mistake during the course of their duties. It does not protect police officers who intentionally act with malice or act with outside the law. The question remains, why is everybody after the law-enforcement bill of rights? We think the defunding the police movement is the reason for such frivolous actions targeting law-enforcement.
While some people see this as an absolute win, it is quite the opposite. Law-enforcement officers make quick split second decisions when during their jobs. They will need some sort of protection from frivolous lawsuits if they make a reasonable mistake while doing their duties. Taking away their protection will generally lead to less officers being proactive, less officers on the job and a significant increase in crime rate as we have seen over the past year.
